The Search for Moorabool’s Best Backyard Veggie Patch
With spring coming to a close, Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association is literally about to raise the veggie patch stakes by launching a search for ‘Moorabool’s Best Backyard Veggie Patch’.
The competition forms part of the annual Bacchus Marsh Harvest Festival, taking place on the third weekend in March each year. Celebrating its 5th year on Sunday 18th March, 2012, the event provides locals and visitors to Moorabool the opportunity to step behind the farmgate, meet the grower, and learn more about what it takes to run a successful orchard, vineyard, market garden, and more.
Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association President David Durham says “ A lot of pride and passion goes into backyard veggie patches. We are fortunate to have such productive soil within the Bacchus Marsh river plateau, and across Moorabool. We encourage our community to get into the spirit of the Bacchus Marsh Harvest Festival and to register their details for Moorabool’s Best Backyard Veggie Patch”
The competition is open to all backyard veggie patch growers (regardless of property size) as well as school kitchen gardens. The only condition is that the veggie patch cannot be grown for commercial purposes. Judging will take place in March 2012, in the fortnight leading up to the Harvest Festival. An independent judge or judges will be announced closer to the date. The winner will receive a $200 hamper containing local produce, crafts and heirloom seeds, and a runner up will receive same to the value of $50.
David Durham says “ We are really excited about this new event feature. We don’t want to be too specific about the criteria – that is up the independent judges and the winner/s will be chosen at their discretion. We would simply love to see everyone get into the spirit of the competition – it is really about celebrating our fantastic local produce, whether you buy it at the farm gate, or grow your own”
To enter, complete the form and return via post to PO Box 153 Bacchus Marsh, 3340 or in person at Jeff Jones Plants & Produce. Otherwise email your details to info@visitbacchusmarsh.com.au, Address details are kept private and there is no public access required to the properties, with the exception of visits by the competition judges which are by appointment. This is a game of skill.
